Rick and Lucy Fender requested that Magley Design assist them in creating a lakeside retreat with an strong modern Asian influence. Site constraints were significant, and would not allow for a full size pool but swimming for exercise was highly desired, and lake setback requirements meant there was no room for a full size pool. By utilizing the existing deck and incorporating a swimming machine, the design was able to provide a small swimming area that could provide for continuous uninterrupted swimming and room left over for an outdoor living area. The outdoor living area was designed to provide a quiet are Lucy and Rick could enjoy meditation and a quiet evening or entertaining a small group of friends. The centerpiece of the area was a sand garden, accessed through a modern interpretation of a traditional moon gate, made from tube steel and draped with a vine to create a tunnel form of moon gate providing separate between the pool and main deck and the private garden.
