Description: In 2010 , as Sr. Principal and project design leader for HHI Design Rick Magley was commissioned to design the grounds for a new men’s shelter for the Central Florida Coalition for the Homeless. In addition to providing building foundation and retention pond landscaping a new men’s courtyard was developed expressing the Coalitions new emphasis on offering the homeless men hope dignity and training so they may become more self sufficient. The courtyard provides a shady respite from the summer sun in a social atmosphere that allows for small or large groups, while also providing a safe environment for all.
Similar to the Seminole County Courtyard, safety is of primary concern. All of the materials used were vetted considering long term wear and maintenance heavily. Plant material selected was based on its ability to take abuse and live with little to no water. Pavements and furnishings were selected to be able to stand the test of time and hold up under continuously intensive usage.
Because funding sources were varied, there were many clients in addition to the staff of the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida. This too is similar to Seminole’s Heroes memorial. The Coalition’s Board of Directors consists of several private developers as well as members of large business and representatives of municipal agencies. Additionally, funds were being received from a theme park as well as the County and City. They all needed to be involved in the decision making process and they all had their own sets of requirements. Orange County was responsible for getting the project ready for permitting, but the City took charge during permitting. Nonetheless all of the permits were received without delay and it is now under construction and will likely be completed early next year. The experience our team brings to the table from projects such as this and Rick’s involvement with the Seminole County Heroes Memorial committee will be a great asset to the County in getting the job completed confidently and on time.
